If you’re the proud parent of the next Tony Hawk or Patti McGee, you’ll want to swing by Logan Square Skate Park this weekend, when the two-year-old ’boarders’ paradise hosts the Chicago kickoff of the Maloof Road Tour. Saturdays during each of 12 coast-to-coast stops are given over to contests in various categories, while Sundays are dedicated to community projects, such as park cleanup, graffiti removal and skate-gear drives. (Participants can trade volunteer hours for points redeemable online for prizes and ticket discounts.) The caravan concludes Labor Day weekend in Washington, D.C.
Today at 3pm, the Vans Bus Stop BBQ rolls into Wilson Skate Park, east of Lake Shore Drive at Wilson Avenue, featuring a meet-and-greet with original Z-Boy Tony Alva. Bucktown skate shop Uprise is the tour’s local cosponsor. Contests on Saturday, June 11 are from 1–4pm at 2430 West Logan Boulevard, under the Kennedy Expressway; get there early to catch free giveaways and BBQ. Return at 10am on Sunday, June 12 to volunteer for the community-building events—no helmets required.
