United Spirit Athletics Cheerleading Workshop
Dance SPA, 3619 N Broadway (773-294-3355, unitedspiritathletics.com). 3:30pm, 4pm, 5:30pm; $12-$15.
We've got spirit, yes we do—now what to do with it? United Spirit Athletics provides an outlet for youth, tween and teen spirit with this cheerleading and poms workshop that builds strength, flexibility, jump techniques, group synchronization, and of course, teamwork. Groups will be divided by ages 5–10 and 10–14.
"Xtreme BUGS"
Brookfield Zoo, 3300 Golf Rd (708-688-8000, czs.org). 10am–5pm; $15, kids ages 3–11 and seniors $10.50.
Brookfield Zoo is experiencing a massive infestation. Fortunately, the bugs—some towering more than 16 feet—are all of the mechanical variety, so they won't likely follow you home to feast in your cupboards or wiggle their way into your pillow fibers. Instead, the zoo's summer-long exhibition takes visitors on a winding trail to spotlight 22 types of animatronic creepy crawlers, including a giant Japanese hornet in the zoo’s Roosevelt Fountain. Also on display are extra-small live insects via Harry's Big Adventure: My Bug World! and more than 150 stationary insects. Activities such as bug-cooking demos, cockroach races and other creepy entertainment are also in the works.
