Frigntmare Haunted House

Eleventh Hour
The four haunts here go from tame to monstrously terrifying (you can buy tickets to two or all four). The two-haunt ticket is considered a scaredy-cat pack. On weekends, the site has a corn maze, pumpkin carving and scarecrow building suitable for younger kids. Ages ten and up. Berthold’s Garden Center, 434 E Devon Ave, Elk Grove Village. Open through Oct 31. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays 7–10pm; Fridays, Saturdays and Oct 30 and Oct 31, 7–11pm. $18–$23.

Frightmare Haunted House
For 20 years, Frightmare has provided thrills and chills in its dark, scary two-story maze. The haunt is part of the year-round Haunted Trails family entertainment park, with ghoulish go-karts, rides and games. Kids under ten should be accompanied by an adult. 7759 S Harlem Ave, Burbank (708-598-8580). Oct 7–31. Mondays through Thursdays 6–10pm; Fridays 6–11pm; Saturdays 3–11pm; Sundays and Oct 10, 3–10pm; Oct 30, 1pm–late; Oct 31, 5pm–late. 20th anniversary special 99-cent admission days Oct 10–13 and Oct 17–20; regular admission $10.

Goebbert’s Pumpkin Farm
Part of this massive pumpkin playground includes a twelve-room haunted house for school-age children with spooky scenes and surprises. But the scares are soft, with no ghoulish actors or ghastly gore. 40 W Higgins Rd, South Barrington (847-428-6727). Through Oct 31. Open daily, 9am–6pm. $5 haunted house, other attractions are an additional charge.

13 Terrors at Theater on the Lake
Terror reigns at the eerie Theater on the Lake—once the site of a sanitarium—as visitors confront evil clowns, a spinning vortex and a mausoleum filled with deadly ghouls. Ages eight and up.
