Art Baltazar celebrates new Superman comic book with in-store appearance in Skokie
Superman is a pretty ubiquitous presence in the DC Comics line, but the launch of a brand-new all-ages monthly title starring the Big Blue Boy Scout is still an occasion worth celebrating. Which is why Chicago native Art Baltazar will be appearing in person at Aw Yeah Comics, the brand-new shop he opened along with his comic-book co-creator Franco Aureliani and retailer Marc Hammond. (We were on hand for their festive grand opening party at the beginning of May.)
We stopped by the store yesterday—Wednesdays are "new comics day" for dedicated fans, and that's when the first issue of Superman Family Adventures hit the shelves. With the brightly colored art and big word balloons, the title is perfect for early readers. Naturally, Aw Yeah Comics has plenty of the first issues on hand, ready for Baltazar to sign today from 3–7pm.
While we were chatting with Hammond yesterday, we saw a father arrive in the store with his young daughter (she looked about four years old) specifically to buy the new comic. She's a big Superman fan, she told me—she even likes him better than Supergirl and Krypto, though she's fond of the whole Kryptonian family. After dad plunked down the three bucks, the pair quickly took their purchase to the comfy big chairs in the middle of the store and read the comic together. Talk about a heartwarming sight!
