Rocknoceros at Kidzapalooza: Live review

Posted in Hipsqueak blog by Frank Sennett on Aug 7, 2010 at 1:22pm

This afternoon's Kidzapalooza lineup is particularly strong, with kiddie-pop star Dan Zanes, late of Del Fuegos; nineties chart-toppers The Verve Pipe Pipe; and Pretenders leader Chrissie Hynde and Welsh singer-songwriter JP Jones' JP, Chrissie + The Fairground Boys promising to perform the year's highest-interest Kidza set.

Meanwhile, Rocknoceros, an amiable, folk-poppy percussion/keyboard/guitar trio from Virginia just set the table for those acts in Pleasant Valley Sunday-ish style.

One of the great things about Kidza is its shady location southeast of Buckingham Fountain. The grass is inviting, as is the accessible mosh pit, which only allows in adults if they're brought in by a kid.

My little dude hasn't gotten his punk-rock spraypaint hairdo yet, but he did score one of the free Paul Frank silkscreened bags as a bunch of little dudes filled the air with joyful drum-circle noise.

I'll report back on the bigger acts later today, but if you can borrow a kid, you should check out this mini-fest within all the Grant Park craziness.
