This weekend’s family-friendly events: August 1–2

SATURDAY, AUGUST 1
Of all Chicago's summer street fests, we think Retro on Roscoe is the most fun for families. Grown-ups get all the usual festival goodies: lots to drink and eat, live music from the usual suspects (Wedding Banned, Hairbangers Ball), plus a chili cook-off and antiques car show. Your kids get an all-star kiddie pop lineup in the form of Ralph's World, Justin Roberts, Mary Macaroni and Scribble Monster, and lots of games and crafts. Best part? It's just $5 to get in.

The Russian American Kids Circus, a troupe of acrobats and performers ages 6–16, performs an afternoon show of aerial and juggling feats at Ravinia. Show starts at 11am; pavilion seats are $10, lawn $5.

Movie purists should be warned that Disney’s Aladdin at Chicago Shakespeare Theater takes quite a few liberties in compressing the story of “street rat” Aladdin and Princess Jasmine to just over an hour. But it’s faithful to the spirit of the 1992 film, and Alan Menken’s score is as fun as you remember.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 2
Can't get enough of Ravinia while the weather's so outdoor concert-y perfect? Us either. The family space, where kids can visit an instrument petting zoo, make crafts and listen to music-themed stories, is open this afternoon from 3–4:30pm, prior to the CSO's performance of Viennese songs and waltzes. Lawn seats are $10, $5 for kids, under 5 is free. (Children under age seven are not permitted in the pavilion.)

If quirky-cool is more your family's thing, visit Woodlawn Cemetary (7600 W Cermak Rd, Forest Park; 630-910-3064) for the International Clown Week Celebration at Showman's Rest. Employees and animals who died in a 1918 circus-train derailment are buried here, and in festive remembrance, jugglers, clowns and other performers come from around the area to share their talents. 1–3pm, FREE!
