Mayor Rahm Emanuel introduces "Lightscape" holiday light display on State Street
Mayor Rahm Emanuel's goal was to introduce a new holiday light display on State Street, "Lightscape: A Multisensory Experience," but instead he was mic-checked by Occupy Chicago protestors. Emanuel's brief remarks—about the greatness of Chicago's downtown—were interrupted, though not drowned out. The protestors asked for a place to exercise their first-amendment rights (they've repeatedly asked the City for a round-the-clock location in which to protest) and called the mayor out for cuts to mental-health clinics that are called for in his recent budget. After flicking on the light display, which consists of a series of lighted poles that are supposed to look like prairie grass, Emanuel quickly wrapped up his speech and took his leave.
