File under: “Hot topics”

  • A fascinating article in The New York Times examines why women in their second trimester are considered the “holy grail” of shoppers, and how companies devote tons of statistical and programming resources toward targeting them.

File under: “Right now we want”

  • Be still our timeless design–loving hearts: Genius Saul Bass (yes, you know his work) published only one children’s book in his entire career, 50 years ago: Henri’s Walk to Paris, a collaboration with Leonore Klein. This month, Rizzoli brings it back into print, making it available to a whole new generation of readers.

  • Kinda related, it seems baby helmets are now a thing that exists.
  • The Wall Street Journal reported this week that comedian, satirical pundit and even more satirical political fund-raiser Stephen Colbert has found a publisher for his upcoming children’s book, I Am a Pole (And So Can You!). Claiming he wrote the book to “cash in” on the celebrity-authored kids’ book craze, Colbert said in a statement that he hopes “the minutes you and your loved ones spend reading it are as fulfilling as the minutes I spent writing it,” nothing less (and nothing more) than we’d expect from the pro prankster. Grand Central Publishing is set to begin selling I Am a Pole on May 8.
  • We’re still LOLing over young Solomon’s sassy plea to LeBron James, urging him to participate in this Saturday’s Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. Best line: “I don’t wanna see no rookies…no rookies from Minnesota dunkin’ it.”
